Kel + Co
The Artisan: Meet the team behind kel + co creative: Kelly Korver, Cara Corbett and Bethany Swinford. This talented trio created the Bohemian tablescape installment that graces the far wall of the restaurant. Their natural instinct for beauty, and ability to design a masterpiece out of mismatched, yet perfectly curated details, created a work of art that is unparalleled. This piece mirrors their own personal aesthetic and took on a life of its own through every intentional element – creating a dining experience that one might stumble upon in the middle of a forest in Bohemia. It’s sure to transport you.
Why/How did you choose your specific craft?
we knew we would be friends because of our mutual love of denim jackets + cheese. this little nugget of a dream was birthed on a kitchen floor mid-DIY project. and, in true k + c fashion, we celebrated our fantastic idea of going into business together with a nightcap at McDonald’s (french fries + ice cream anyone?). since then, we've simply let the business grow organically + we've had a blast watching everything unfold.
with creative backgrounds, we both love using the inspiration around us to create awesome spaces + experiences for our clients. we curate, create, design, craft, install, + simply make things beautiful.
What excited you about the Bohemian House project?
It is rare to have the opportunity to exact a piece that so closely mirrors your personal style. Having the chance to mesh our company aesthetic with the vision of BoHo was a refreshing experience that brought strength and beauty in a new way to our installation. This is an experience we can only hope to replicate in the future.
What was your inspiration behind your work at Bohemian House?
We found a balance of that “old world” feel and quirkiness of bohemia by incorporating mixed mediums. We used rustic reclaimed wood to frame and support the 16ft piece constructed of handcrafted, antiqued mirrors, vintage-inspired place settings, and mixed metals throughout. We then added intricate, personalized details - elephants, birds, florals, driftwood - throughout the piece to highlight the playfulness of the bohemian spirit.
What’s integral to the work of an artist?
It’s staying passionate about your craft and loving the process. As soon as you lose sight of that, your product suffers. We love what we do. We love being creative and working through new ideas and concepts. It fuels our work.
What’s your secret for staying true to your individual style?
We love to do it ourselves and try to do everything we can in-house. We build, we script, construct, paint as much as we can, so we can have control over the overall look of a piece. We love everything eclectic, earthy, bohemian and love to bring that into the work we do. There is beauty in chaos and we strive to work against anything that’s cookie cutter and give unique personality to all of our pieces.
Professionally, what does the future of your business look like?
We want our business to grow as organically as possible. We want to be part of more installations in and outside Chicago- we love a good road trip! We want to continue growing our event design business and get our hands on any design project big or small.
